The Brain Ages Faster With Poor Sleep

A 2025 study published in Nature examined biological ageing clocks across multiple organ systems and found that sleep duration and quality are directly associated with the biological age of the brain. People consistently sleeping under six hours had brains that appeared older than their chronological age. The optimal window for lowest biological brain age was 6.4 to 7.8 hours — with both under- and over-sleeping associated with accelerated biological ageing.

Why Sleep Debt Is Different After 40

Sleep debt — the accumulated deficit from consistently sleeping less than your body needs — is not something you fully recover from at weekends.
